Plot Summary
Inside this carefully curated anthology, 15 well-known authors share their personal experiences and voices to speak about the myths and stereotypes of being a part of the Latin diaspora. In this collection, the writers take this opportunity to dissolve any opinions of what people think is the Latinx experience, and educate them using their voices to speak the truth.
Critical Analysis
In this anthology, 15 authors take this opportunity to use their voices and speak up about their personal experiences growing up part of the Latinx diaspora. At this time in the world, it seems any differing individualities are under critical review and instantly judged. At young ages when judgement usually begins over appearances, the authors share moments where they yearn to fit in. Not because it's "the right thing" to do, but just to experience peace and have unwanted attention lifted off of them. These authors are African American and Latino/Latina, it was difficult to not only overlook differing appearances, but narrowing down which culture to embrace or find a way to balance each unique culture. As they aged, many of the authors came into their own and embraced their individualities and cultures. Each essay covers different subjects such as immigration, adoption, racism, appearances, sexuality, depression, etc. Different Latin cultures are represented throughout the collection, such as Cuba, Colombia, Panama, Mexico, etc. This collection is bound to inspire readers to embrace their identities, speak up with confidence, find like minded people for unconditional support, but most of all, love who they are and what they offer to the world.
