Critical Analysis
An inspiring biography, teaching any readers to never give up on their dreams. Bryant has chosen to write about the life of African-American artist Horace Pippen, who from a young age has been interested in art and creating pictures for his friends and family. He used supplies such as charcoal, colored pencils, paints, brushes, and pencils. Art was a wonderful escape for Horace, however, he never let it take over his everyday responsibilities, such as helping his family out around the house. Unfortunately, his father left when Horace was in 8th grade, forcing working small jobs to make ends meet. Eventually, World War II begins around this time and Horace enlists in the Army. During this time, he is shot in the shoulder, injuring his arm. Horace remains positive and strong, even though his pain affects his ability to create art. Most people would let go of their dream at this point, but not Horace. He perseveres and practices painting with his injured arm, until he is able to create pieces of the world just the way he sees it. There are many situations throughout Horace Pippen's life that could've taken a negative turn, however, as a strong individual, he is able to overcome these obstacles and pursue his dreams. Bryant does a great job capturing Pippen's strength and modest view of the world, inspiring anyone to remain positive in times of hardships.
Sweet's illustrations do a great job of capture readers of all ages attention with the variety of colors used throughout the story. There are many details to take in from each page, the mixture of watercolor, gouache, and collage are eye-catching. It seems that the illustrator has done her research on the work of Horace Pippin, using it as inspiration to include specific quotes and engaging illustrations to paint the picture of a beautiful artist.
